CBRT in a Nutshell
Discover a new way to reduce stress, build resilience, and connect with your deeper capacity for compassion.
Compassion-Based Resilience Training (CBRT) blends mindfulness, cognitive science, and compassion practices into an evidence-based eight-week program. Originally developed at Columbia University and taught in hospital and wellness settings, CBRT has helped thousands of people find calm, clarity, and meaning in their daily lives.

“Self – compassion is like a muscle. The more we practice flexing it, especially when life doesn’t go exactly according to plan ) a frequent scenario for most of us), the stronger and more resilient our compassion muscle becomes.” -Sharon Salzberg
“You, yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection.”-Buddha

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Is this therapy or education?
CBRT is an educational program, not psychotherapy. It teaches mindfulness, compassion, and resilience skills that can support your well-being and complement therapy or medical care, but it does not replace professional treatment.
Is this CBT?
No. While CBRT shares some similarities with cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), it is based on mindfulness and compassion practices, supported by neuroscience and contemplative science, and designed to cultivate awareness and resilience.
Do I need prior meditation experience?
Not at all. CBRT is beginner-friendly. Each session includes guided instructions and practices, so you can follow along at your own pace.
What if I miss a session?
Don’t worry — you’ll have access to recorded materials and can continue your daily practices to stay on track.
How much time should I plan to commit each week?
Expect one live class (about an hour) plus 15–30 minutes of practice on most days. Many participants find the practices easily fit into daily routines.
Who created CBRT?
CBRT was developed by Dr. Joe Loizzo at Columbia University and the Nalanda Institute for Contemplative Science. It is evidence-based and has been taught in hospitals, wellness programs, and academic settings.
Will I receive materials?
Yes — participants receive guided meditations, readings, and access to the student site for ongoing support.
